Below is an overview map of all the heritage sites in California and Nevada on this website. Select a dot, and click on the picture to take you to the website.
Mobile App:
If you have a phone or tablet that has a global-positioning system (GPS) chip, you may use your device to find these sites. Follow these steps:
1) Go to your app store, and search for “ESRI Explorer.”
2) Download, install, and open the free app.
3) Select “Continue Without Signing In.”
4) In the search window, type “explore apa heritage”
5) Select the “explore apa heritage” map.
6) Allow “Explorer” to access your location while you are using the app.
A map of all the sites will appear.
7) Zoom to the site that you wish to navigate to. Some will have parking points near the site. Select the parking spot, if available. Sometimes, you will inadvertently select the parking spot and walking trail simultaneously. It will give you a choice of which ones to choose. Choose the point.
On the bottom row, you will see 3 symbols: a bullseye with an arrow, a compass, and a bookmark.
8) Select the first bullseye with the arrow.
ESRI Explorer is not able to navigate to the site, and therefore relies on other apps on your device. It will give you an option of navigational app programs to choose from.
9) Select your preferred navigational app (for example, Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, etc.).
10) Follow your navigational app program to the site.
Once you get to the site, you may switch back to ESRI Explorer to get closer. ESRI Explorer also gives you the option of viewing different basemaps, which could aid you in finding the site. To use another basemap, select the 3 dots in the upper left corner of the screen. Satellite “imagery” and “USA Topo Maps” may assist you in finding the site.
Note: some locations are approximations, and therefore you may not be able to find it. In addition, some points may be intentionally placed in the middle of the road or on an office building because the true location is unknown, sensitive, or on private land. Please read the entry before going to visit the site to temper your expectations.
Some areas are remote, and may not receive cell service. Therefore, check whether your navigational app (Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, etc.) has downloadable maps.
Safety: Some sites may require you drive on miles of dirt road to reach your destination. Other sites may require you to hike miles on trails or cross-country. Inclement weather may occur while you are on your trip. Be prepared by reviewing the Forest Service’s “Know Before You Go” website. If you are inexperienced, bring a friend who is experienced.
