A Chinese wood charcoal kiln near the Donner Route was recently discovered. This site is located near the Walter Hobart Mansion. Hobart was one of the first millionaires of the Comstock Lode who hired Chinese to work on his logging operations, at first called Hobart and Marlette and later Sierra Nevada Wood and Lumber Company. Most of the wood charcoal produced in Truckee was used to fuel the Central Pacific and other railroad lines, as well as the mining miles in Nevada, Utah, and California. An archaeologist, Susan Lindstrom, is currently working on this site.
